Benjamin Schreiber, president of the Agudas Israel in Austria, has been arrested and accused of violating the foreign trade laws by making about $45,000 through illegal transactions. Schreiber’s partner, a Hungarian Jewish displaced person, was also arrested.
Schreiber was arrested on similar charges last year, but was released on bail and the charges were subsequently dropped. Schreiber was the leading Agudah candidate in the Jewish communal elections, slated to be held January 20.
