The Federal Cross of Merif, First Class, has been conferred on the president of the local Jewish Community, Jean Mandel, in recognition of his work on behalf of Christian-Jewish cooperation and in rebuilding Jewish life here.
The Fuerth Jewish community, now about 300 strong, has a larger proportion of children than any other city in Germany and its spiritual leader, Rabbi David Spiro of War saw, is considered the outstanding Chassidic personality in the country. Mandel, who was born in this city, is only 45, an unusually young age to receive the high Bonn award that has been bestowed upon him.
