The proposed plan for the creation of a separate Jewish municipality within the Jerusalem municipality appears to be gaining ground. A delegation of the Jewish community which will call upon the Acting High Commissioner to discuss the status of the Jerusalem municipality, which has had no Jewish councillors since the Jewish members resigned last April as a protest against the treatment of the Jews, will raise the question of a separate Jewish municipality after the fashion of Tel Aviv.
A society calling itself Hatoshav has been organized to take legal steps necessary to separate the Jewish community in Jerusalem from the rest of the population and to obtain autonomy for it. The founders of the movement, chiefly lawyers, have announced that the Hatoshav now has 1,000 members.
Some weeks ago the Jewish town council of Jerusalem declared that it was opposed to the Hatoshav movement which it termed irresponsible and likely to undermine discipline. The town council demanded that the Hatoshav leaders desist from further activity.
