The Rumanian Minister of Education, Dr. Constantin Angelescu, capitulated today to the anti-Jewish demands of Dr. Vaida-Voevod, former premier, who is now conducting a campaign to introduce restrictions in education and in commerce for national minorities in Rumania.
Presiding over a conference of university rectors, Minister Angelescu declared that the introduction of drastic cuts in the number of students in Rumanian universities and colleges, is necessary. He urged radical curtailment of students in the colleges of medicine, law and commerce as well as in the technical institutes.
As a result of Dr. Angelescu’s views, the conference decided to introduce the “numerus-valachius” in the Rumanian universities—a measure long demanded by Dr. Vaida-Voevod and by anti-Semitic student bodies.
In voting for the introduction of the restrictions in the universities, the conference decided that the selection of students should be conducted on the basis of intellectual ability. This provision is considered a disguised method of making it difficult for students of national minorities in Rumania to enter higher educational institutions in the country.
