The History of German Jews in America was traced by Rabbi Israel Goldstein of Congregation B’nai Jeshurun, New York City, in a lecture at Temple Israel here.
“Among the Jews of German or partly German origin in New York during the first quarter of the nineteenth century two names stand out,” Rabbi Goldstein declared. “One is that of Sampson Simson, the first Jewish graduate of Columbia University and the first Jewish member of the bar. The other was Mordecai Noah, half Sephardic and half Ashkenazic. He was beyond question a brilliant orator, publicist, jurist, playwright and statesman.”
