Representatives of fifty women’s organizations, including Hadassah, the National Council of Jewish Women, B’nai B’rith Women’s groups and the Women’s American Ort, today participated in an all-day conference on the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration in the Mayflower Hotel here.
“Hundreds of people from voluntary societies now are in training for field work alongside UNRRA or are brigaded with UNRRA personnel in field missions, waiting to move in to help the liberated people,” L. B. Pearson, Minister Plenipotentiary of the Canadian Embassy and chairman of the second session of the UNRRA Council held this summer in Montreal, told the women present.
Marse Salisbury, director of public relations of UNRRA, told the group that thirty UNRRA representatives are now working with military officers in liberated areas in the care of displaced persons who are to be repatriated. These, he said, will eventually be in charge of UNRRA activities when the army relinquishes control. According to Thomas M. Cooley, II, deputy director of the division on displaced persons, “the biggest job will be in Germany where some eight to mine million displaced persons will be found. Few, if any, Jews will be among them,” he said.
