Huge throngs turned out in the East End yesterday to cheer King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on their formal visit to the thickly populated Jewish district, which marked their first official public appearance since accession to the throne.
A special demonstration took place when the automobile bearing the monarchs passed the Whitechapel Jewish Legion Hall. A contingent of Jewish ex-service men, wearing their war decorations, met the car, dipped their Legion banners and saluted as the crowds cheered.
After spending more than an hour in the East End, during which they visited the People’s Palace, the royal couple returned to Buckingham Palace over the same route.
