The opposition of the Vatican frustrated the candidacy for Vice Secretary General of the League of Nations of Ludwik Rajchman, a Polish Jew, according to the “Gazeta Warszawska,” organ of the anti-Semitic National Democratic Party.
The paper asserts that the name of Rajchman, who is the head of the Health Department of the League of Nations, was recently proposed by the Polish government.
The highest Catholic authorities however intervened and vigorously campaigned against the appointment. Rajchman was attacked, it says, by the “Osservatore Romano”, organ of the Vatican and Catholic organs in other countries.
The fact that Rajchman, with the consent of the League, is also serving as a Chinese Functionaire aroused the opposition of the Japanese as well. Thus Rajchman’s selection was rendered impossible, it states.
The paper couples these statements with attacks upon the Polish government for presenting a Jew for office.
