The United States Government has made a protest to the Egyptian Government over the seizure of the American ship “The Flying Trader” and removal of her cargo and is now discussing the matter with the Egyptian Government, Secretary of State George C. Marshall told a press conference here yesterday.
The Egyptian Government’s action in seizing and unloading the cargo violated the Suez Canal Convention of 1886 which provides that the Canal shall always be open to any vessel both in times of peace and in times of war, he said. Secretary Marshall said this government had protested also the Egyptian Government’s announced intention to seize cargoes destined for Jewish ports.
