A request to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to investigate what appears to be the false marking of gloves which are believed to come from Germany with the label, “Made in Luxembourg,” was addressed yesterday to the Consul of Luxembourg in New York, Harry Krombach, by Dr. Joseph Tenenbaum, chairman of the Boycott Committee of the American Jewish Congress, and supplemented with a similar request to the United States Customs Authorities.

The communication points out that while the Department of Commerce Here no glove Imports from Luxembourg, the American market has recently been flooded with leather gloves, carrying the Luxembourg label. This is confirmed by an investigation carried out by the Committee of the American Jewish Congress.

Under American law false labeling of countries of origin is a criminal offense.

Dr. Tenenbaum’s communication declares: “This committee is seriously concerned regarding the extraordinary disparity which exists between what we understand to be the dimunitive exportable surplus of kid gloves in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the large quantities of these gloves which are being offered for sale in the retail stores of this city, marked ‘Made in Luxembourg.’

BELIEVES REICH MISLABELS GLOVES

“If, as we have been led to believe, Germany is the principal origin of this supply, it follows that the fiscal regulations of both Luxembourg and the United States are being infringed by unscrupulous traders in order to deceive the very numerous American citizen who are refusing to purchase all kinds of German merchandise, but who would glady acquire the products of Luxembourg and Belgium.

“To ascertain with any degree of accuracy the volume of this trade in so-called Luxembourg gloves seems to be impossible, but whereas the Department of Commerce lists no such imports from Luxembourg, we have found retail establishments which sell them almost exclusively in perfect good faith.

“We have no doubt that the grand-ducal government will gladly take measures to stem this abuse at the source if notified of its existence by you,” the communication declares.

Department of Commerce statistics show, according to Dr. Tenenbaum, that Germany has been the largest exporter of gloves to the United States, sending here in 1932 3,812,487 pairs, valued at $2,777,547.
