United States Senator George Murphy, Republican from California, conferred today for one hour with Israeli army intelligence chief General Aharon Yariv and with members of the General’s office. General Yariv gave the Senator a brief outline of the situation along the borders and the development since the cease-fire. At a press meeting later, Mr. Murphy expressed approval of the American peace initiative. “The fundamental approach of it is sound, though there may be need for some modifications,” he said. Referring to Senator J.W. Fulbright’s plan. Mr. Murphy expressed opposition to the rather “off hand and unprepared plan of my distinguished colleague.” Speaking about Russian activities in the Middle East, he said that when Israel talks about violations of the cease-fire by the Egyptians it is actually done by the Russians. “We tend to forget that it is the Russians who are the real people who make troubles,” Mr. Murphy said. It was the same in Cuba and it is the same in the Far East, he noted. The Senator said he is convinced that President Nixon would stand by his promises to Israel and that, in any case, Israelis are not being sold out in another Munich. “Israel is to exist and America will help her and guarantee her existence,” he declared. Earlier today. Sen. Murphy. here on a three day visit, met with Premier Golda Meir and gave her the letter he had brought from President Nixon. Emerging from the meeting, he said that Mrs. Meir seemed satisfied with the contents of the letter. Sen. Murphy said he would report to Washington on his visit and talk.
