Shertok in Cairo Conferring on Jewish Brigade; Arabs Ready to Compromise of Palestine

Moshe Shertok, head of the political department of the Jewish Agency, has arrived in Cairo to confer with Middle-Eastern military headquarters in connection with further plans for the Jewish Brigade.

(The Jerusalem correspondent of the New York Times reports today that it is understood that the foreign ministers of the Arab states who recently met in cairo to draft the constitution for the proposed League of Arab Nations recommended a compromise solution of the Palestine problem which would provide for an increase in the present Jewish population from 700,000 to 1,000,000 equal to the Moslem population, with about 150,000 Christian Arabs in Palestine holding the balance of power.

(The correspondent quotes a Palestine Arab political observer as stating that while the Arabs there might be opposed to the plan at first, they would aventually accept it, but with the proviso that Britain would have to surrender the mandate to a permanent United Nations authority to be established at San Francisco. The Zionists, the correspondent adds, are opposed to the proposal and will insist on unconditional and unlimited Jewish immigration so as to enable the Jews to regain political statehood.)

Palestine High Commissioner Lord Gort was the guest of honor here yesterday at a reception given by the Jewish Journalist Association. In a friendly talk with the Jewish newspapermen he expressed satisfaction with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reports of his visits to various Jewish settlements, and indicated that he watches the Hebrew press with great interest.
