A report on the situation of the Jews in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia was presented here tonight at the opening session of a three-day meeting of the World Jewish Congress executive, which was attended by some 60 delegates from Jewish communities in 30 different countries.
The report was presented by A. L. Easterman, political secretary, who said that there was no problem of specific Jewish interest now in Algeria and that there was hope that nothing to cause concern would develop in the foreseeable future. In Tunisia, he pointed out, the Neo Destour Party displayed an understanding of the specific needs of the Jewish community and that the Jewish community, which maintained close and cordial relations with the Neo Destour had little to fear as long as that movement was in power.
In Morocco, Mr. Easterman stressed, the situation of the Jews was much more difficult and many of them were living in indescribable poverty and squalor. Although the Moroccan nationalist movement was making violent attempts to rid itself of the French, there was reason to believe that Jewish interests would be taken into account in the search for a solution between the nationalists and France.
