M. Tchernov, Commissar of Agriculture, announced today establishment of a special department to stimulate agricultural settlement in the Jewish autonomous region of Biro-Bidjan, in Soviet Siberia.
The department will concentrate entirely on the agricultural activities of the territory. Under the direction of the commissar or an assistant, it will supervise settlement of new collective farmers, building of houses and improvement of agricultural conditions generally.
Commissar Tchernov, speaking at a joint conference of Comzet and Ozet, Government and private agency, respectively, for resettling Jews on the land, emphasized that the question of establishing Jewish collective farms in Biro-Bidjan was of the utmost State importance and the work in the future would be undertaken on a large Government scale.
