Dr. Nikolai T. Fedorenko, the Soviet Union Ambassador to the United Nations, lashed out very sharply at Israel’s Ambassador here and against Israel’s alleged “provocative aggressions” against the Arab states. He endorsed a Security Council draft resolution — co-sponsored by Jordan and Mali — condemning Israel for its July 14th air raid against Syria. At the same time Dr. Fedorenko asserted that “the Soviet Union will continue to support the strength and political independence of the Arab states of the Middle East.”
“We have now reached the stage where we must take a decision for the cessation of such acts of aggression and provocation by Israel, ” the Soviet representative told the Council. “The Soviet Union decisively condemns the action of Israel against Syria July 14th as an act of aggression which is a violation of the United Nations Charter and of international law. We support the draft resolution and consider it only a minimum of what has to be done here.”
The Council adjourned its session until tomorrow afternoon. The unofficial score for and against the possible adoption of the Mali-Jordan resolution against Israel stood at adjournment at seven against and five for. At least nine affirmative votes are required in the 15-member Council.
