A statement dealing with the problem of religious freedom in Soviet Russia will be issued shortly by Ivan Maisky, Soviet ambassador in London, it was disclosed here today by the Agudas Israel headquarters.
Leaders of the Agudas Israel organization stated that the Soviet ambassador “had shown considerable sympathy” when the question was raised by a delegation of orthodox Jews. In addition to discussing the problem with Maisky, members of the Agudas Israel executive have also approached the Foreign Office and the Polish government in London with a view toward securing their intervention with the Soviet authorities.
On the occasion of the Russo-Polish agreement, the Agudah World Executive today sent a message of congratulations to the Polish premier Gen. Sikorski. Pointing out that almost a million Jews are involved in the war zone on Soviet and Polish scil, the Agudah message said that “although these victims are now suffering from the Nazi marauders, they too will rejoice over the fact that Russia and Poland have joined friendship.”
