The Soviet Union today notified the United Nations Secretariat that it is in no way concerned with the British request transmitted by U.N. Secretary General Trygve Lie last month to U.N. member nations asking them to help prevent “illegal” Jewish immigration to Palestine.
In answering an accompanying letter from Lie asking each nation to state what it is doing to comply with the British request, the Soviet Government made it clear that it was not obliged to comment on the request. It added that the U.S.S.R. “takes cognizance of the General Assembly’s resolution of May 15, 1947” with regard to Palestine, in which no mention is made of the immigration issue.
