The offer of the Communists to arm Egypt creates a serious situation which should put the free world on its guard, former President Harry S. Truman said here. Mr. Truman told 10,000 persons who jammed Boston Garden at a rally which launched the Combined Jewish Appeal drive that an armament race in the Middle East with all the existent tensions and passions, could create an alarming situation.”
The former President declared that only if the United States remains militarily strong and stands firm with her allies can aggression be averted in the Middle East. He emphasized his belief that the economic potential of the area could be developed only if the nations of the area remained free of Communist domination, and stressed that the region is an economic entity with room and resources enough for all.
Louis P Smith, general chairman of the Combined Jewish Appeal drive, told the rally that American Jews were now responsible for the life or death of any single North African Jew. He said that American Jewry must help to resettle as many north African Jews as possible.
