The State Department is refusing to hire other than “white and Gentile” workers, it was disclosed today in the New York Post, which says that OPA Administrator Chester Bowles made these charges in a letter to President Truman. Bowles also implicated other government agencies, including the Weather Bureau, the Department of Commerce, and the Civil Aeronauties Administration.
Bowles’ protest, which was also sent to the U.S. Civil Service Commission, formed the basis for President Truman’s Dec. 20 charges that “loyal and qualified employees” have been refused tranefer and re-employment “solely because of race and creed,” the Post reported. The President implemented his accusation by directing the Fair Employment Practices Committee to report to him on all cases of discrimination during reconversion.
