The bronze statue of the Italian-Jewish poet Italo Svero has been toppled from its pedestal in a prominent public square of Trieste, it was learned here today. The statue was covered with black paper on which a sign, reading, “Jew. The Bronze should be given to the country,” had been affixed. Svero was born in Trieste in 1861 and died in 1928. He was considered one of the most important poets in contemporary Italian literature. His real name was Ettore Schmitz.
