Sumner Shapiro, a Jewish Navy rear admiral who expressed early concern about convicted spy Jonathan Pollard, died at age 80. Shapiro died of cancer Tuesday at his home in McLean, Va., The Washington Post reported. The admiral, a Russian specialist, served as director of naval intelligence from 1978 to 1982.
