An appeal to public opinion has been issued by the Zurich Committee of the Swiss Jewish Federation of Communities in connection with last month’s rowdyism displayed by Swiss Nazis against Jews, as a result of which half a dozen Nazis went to jail.
“We express our firm conviction,” a statement by the committee published in the Zurich dailies declared, “that the people of Zurich condemn these methods on the ground of well-tried political experience.”
Pointing out that the Jews “refuse to carry on a fight against these vilifiers, agitators and enemies of democracy with the knuckle-duster, steel whip, pistols and tear-gas bombs,” the appeal assailed “the battle cry taken over by these so-called renewers from the Third Reich, ‘Perish Judea!’ as it has been raised in a scandalous manner during the last few days in the midst of our city.”
The statement asserted that the Jews are aware that “these elements will never be taught better” except by strong action of the authorities, adding that the Swiss people are supporting its officials in their efforts to “exterminate” Nazi rowdies.
