There is no substitute for the synagogue, although a considerable number of institutions are complementing its work, Rabbi B. Leon Hurwitz declared at the forty-eighth anniversary dinner-dance of the Congregation B’nai Sholaum, held last night at the Half Moon Hotel, Coney Island.
Rabbi Hurwitz pointed out that social, fraternal and philanthropic agencies, however large and important, are merely “a part of Jewish life, and “cannot be as satisfying to the soul as the whole.” Judge Mitchell May and Nathan L. Goldstein, president of the congregation, also spoke.
