The Tel Aviv city council, in view of the critical housing condition in the city, has voted to extend all leases on homes in this city for a fourteen month period. The city, which has grown tremendously in the last ten years, is faced by a shortage of housing for its population, hundreds here living in tents and impoverished shelters. The steady flow of new inhabitants into the city has created a situation putting all houses and apartments at a premium and the council was compelled to extend all leases in order to prevent rents from sky-rocketing.
A heavy building program is being pushed here with homes and apartment houses under erection in all parts of the city. The shortage of skilled labor, however, has seriously handicapped the building program and prevented it from keeping pace with the population requirements.
