The Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia has banned the letters SS and SA from vehicle license plates because of their association with the Nazi era. According to the State Transportation Ministry, many motorists have requested the letters. Also banned, although specifically requested, are the letters KZ, the German abreviation for concentration camp, and HJ which once stood for Hitler Jugend.
