The Israeli Knesset is scheduled to vote this week on legislation that would do away with direct elections for prime minister. Critics of the current system charge that direct elections lead to an increased number of political parties and create more divisiveness in Israeli society. Benjamin Netanyahu was the first prime minister elected by the direct system of voting in 1996.
