The opposition candidate for German chancellor said during a visit to Israel that he would continue to underscore German responsibility for the Holocaust if elected to the post in September. Gerhard Schroeder told reporters, “Historic responsibility is something that transcends generations and must be handed down.” Recent polls indicate that Schroeder will win the German elections and end Chancellor Helmut Kohl’s 16 years in power.
