The scene was quiet until Caldwell’s play, “Tobacco. Road,” opened. Based on his novel of the same title, Viking, when they became Caldwell’s publisher took it over from Scribner. There seemed no reason for its publication in play form. It was undoubtedly offered first to Viking and they must have rejected it for soon it was going the rounds of the other publishers who expressed an interest in it. These other publishers hoped that by bringing it out Mr. Caldwell would then give them his other books. When they learned that he still had a contract with Viking ## play was rejected.
Viking evidently experienced a change of mind and heart and ## a gesture for their author’s ## will have decided to publish ## Chances for its success as a ## are very slim but an author as been made happy.
