The United States would “very strongly urge” Israel not to fight back if attacked by Iraq, U.S. Secretary of Defense William Cohen said in a television interview. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement, “Israel retains the right to defend itself and will operate according to its security interests. This position has not changed.”
