All roads to Tel Aviv were crowded today with public and private vehicles in which tens of thousands of persons from all over the country rode to participate in today’s Purim carnival, celebrated annually in the streets of Tel Aviv, commemorating the deliverance of the Jews from Haman, the Persian minister, who plotted to exterminate the Jewish population of Persia, 2,300 years ago.
Thousands of Arabs were among the crowds who came to this all-Jewish city today to take part in the Purim festivities. It is estimated that more than 100,000 persons jammed the streets for the parade, street dancing and masquerades which took place in the central portions of the city.
The festivities were opened by Meier Dizengoff, mayor of Tel Aviv, with a message of greeting to world Jewry. The city was richly illuminated and gay songs were heard from early evening till late in the morning. Dancing continued all night long in the streets, with young and old participating.
