The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations, at the closing session of its annual convention at the Hotel Edison, adopted a resolution approving the immediate imposition of a tax of $1.00 on all members of orthodox Jewish congregations, for the purpose of raising a fund to meet the emergency situation in Jewish religious institutions.
The resolution was in support of the plan proposed by Rabbi Herbert S. Goldstein, the retiring president, who estimated that the sum of $1,200,000 could be raised inasmuch as there are 3,000 orthodox Jewish Congregations with an average membership of 400.
A membership drive in all orthodox congregations is also to be launched.
Other resolutions adopted approved the efforts to secure uniform Sunday legislation to permit Sabbath observers to work on Sunday, and the American Federation of Labor’s stand for a five day week.
The convention also approved the imposition of a Torah stamp on all candles used for religious purposes to raise a fund for the support of Yeshivas and Talmud Torahs.
