President Truman, receiving a delegation of Jewish War Veterans, today expressed the hope that other countries might follow the lead of the United States in arranging for the admission of displaced persons under the existing immigration laws.
The delegation, led by Maxwell Cohan, national commander of the JWV, requested Presidential action to penalize racial and religious discrimination against veterans by certain educational institutions, by refusing the schools grants of federal funds under the G.I. Bill of Rights.
The President told the delegation that he recognized this discrimination was a serious problem, and that he did not like it. The JWV group left a statement with Truman expressing the organization’s support of the FEPC.
