The Turkish Government today asked the Rumanian Foreign Office to prevent the emigration of Jews from Rumania to Palestine via Turkey and said that Turkish transit visas will not be issued to such emigrants.
In making this request, the Turkish Government emphasized that it is no longer able to issue transit visas to Jews in view of the fact that the Palestine Government is restricting Jewish immigration into Palestine. The Foreign Office has notified the Zionist leaders in Bucharest of the Turkish request.
Jewish leaders today reported that plans have been completed for immodiate aid to Rumanian Jews repatriated from Transaistria and these liberated from concentration camps. Each family will be given 75,000 lei (approximately $525), It is estimated that a billion Lei will be needed to finance such assistance, which aims at restoring the repatraited Jews to a normal economic status. The funds are expected to come from the Joint Distribution Committee.
