Two London Synagogues Attacked As Ashes of Scrolls from Earlier Incident Are Buried

Two more synagogues were attacked in London last night. Windows were smashed in both of them.

Two men who were hurling stones at a synagogue in Bayawater, a fashionable West London section, escaped after they were discovered by the caretaker. A youth who had broken several windows of the Eillesden synagogue surrendered to the police a short time after committing the deed.

In a solemn, impressive ceremony the ashes of twelve Scrolls destroyed in a fire set by vandals last week in the Dollie Hill synagogue were buried last night with traditional rites for the dead. The services, which were conducted a few hours before the latest attacks on London temples, were attended by Jews from all parts of the city including Acting Chief Rabbi Harris M. Lazarus and representatives of various synagogue federations.

Scotland Yard today announced that it had frustrated attempts by two gangs of criminals to set up a “Protection Society” to “guard” Jews against beating and destruction of their shops in the East End of London. In the usual racketeering manner, the gangsters offered to “protect” the Jews for a fee. Following complaints, the police discovered that the two gangs were covering the same “territory.”
