Two Democratic Senators have proposed that a joint Soviet-American inspection force supervise observance of the Middle East cease-fire by Egypt and Israel. Sen. Harold E. Hughes of Iowa and Sen. Alan Cranston of California, have written to Secretary of State William P. Rogers expressing their “deep concern” over reported Egyptian violations and urging Mr. Rogers to “move forcefully now to take what we believe would be a dramatic and effective means of maintaining the cease-fire and standstill.” The joint Big Two police force, they said, “would reassure both parties (Egypt and Israel) that their military positions would not be jeopardized while the (peace) talks are going one.” Sen. Hughes and Sen. Cranston are leading liberals. The former has been spoken of as a possible 1972 Presidential candidate.
