The U.S. and Israeli navies are cooperating successfully in the Mediterranean, according to Admiral Thomas Hayward, Chief of U.S. Naval Operations, who inspected Israeli ships and naval installation in Haifa today.
“We continue to train together and exchange ideas together. I have a great deal of confidence that the Israeli Navy and the U.S. Navy in the Mediterranean can do a great job together if necessary, ” Hay ward told Israeli reporters. He added however, that “Your navy, like that of the U.S., should be larger. I don’t think you have enough ships or equipment.”
The American admiral, who called on Defense Minister Ariel Sharon in Tel Aviv yesterday for a discussion of Middle Eastern problems, said he thought Israel faced a threat from the Mediterranean. He said the U.S. Sixth Fleet was keeping a watch over the Syrian and Libyan navies and was determined to maintain stability in the region.
