U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright initiated separate conference calls with members of the American Jewish and Arab American communities. Albright told both groups that important work has been accomplished to secure an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement but that much remains to be done, according to participants in the calls. Albright repeatedly told both groups that security is the most important aspect of the peace process. Arab American leaders told Albright of the desperation of the Palestinian economic situation, while the Jewish participants stressed security concerns.
