Resumption of arms shipments by the United States to Jordan is under discussion and active consideration, U.S. sources said here today in expressing the view that King Hussein will retain his alleged moderation and pro-Western orientation despite offers that may be made during the king’s current visit to Moscow.
King Hussein arrived in Moscow to seek Soviet diplomatic and economic support, according to the Jordanian Government. Reports received here from Moscow said Soviet military equipment will be offered to Hussein.
He was greeted at Moscow Airport by Soviet President Nikolai V. Podgorny. The newspaper Pravda said “the Soviet people are welcoming King Hussein to the Soviet Union and expressing confidence that his visit will contribute to the cause of peace and security in the Middle East, elimination of the aftermath of Israel’s aggression against the Arab states, and further development of Soviet-Jordanian relations” The king will discuss plans to force Israeli withdrawal through world diplomatic pressure.
(The Cairo newspaper Al Ahram reported today that a new peace plan for the Middle East, having United States support, will soon be submitted to the United Nations Security Council. The Nasser mouthpiece said that the plan which assertedly involves Israeli withdrawal from the territories it occupied last June partially meets with the approval of the Arab states.)
