Louis A. Pincus, chairman of the Jewish Agency Executive in Jerusalem, issued a plea to the United Jewish Appeal to increase “radically” its financial aid to Israel. In response, the UJA held a Cash Mobilization Conference here June 7-8. Edward Ginsberg, UJA national general chairman, emphasized the urgency of the plight. He called on American Jewish communities to initiate immediate emergency campaigns to buoy the Jewish Agency’s growing immigration, health and humanitarian needs. Mr. Pincus wrote the UJA that a “backlog of mounting unmet needs” of immigrants and the underprivileged “requires a massive increase in the present rate of cash receipts from pledges.” He said the Jewish Agency, which relies solely on UJA aid for its projects, is “carrying out this humanitarian work in a situation growing more critical from day to day.” He added that “We have no doubt that American Jewry despite all obstacles will see us through these difficult days.” It is estimated that Israel spends $3 million a day for defense and $1 million a day for immigration needs. In addition, the country’s foreign-currency reserves have hit a record low. Mr. Ginsberg emphasized that the mounting need in Israel for humanitarian services, immigration and health is so urgent that immediate cash is required.
