Ambassador Gunnar V. Jarring, special United Nations envoy in the Middle East, flew to Cairo today for a brief meeting with Egyptian officials. It was Dr. Jarring’s first direct contact with either side in the Middle East dispute since his consultations in New York last weekend. At that time, he was understood to have gained agreement from Secretary-General U Thant and the big powers to proceed to a second stage in his quest for peace — an invitation to Israel, Egypt and Jordan to send delegations to the UN headquarters in Nicosia.
