The United Automobile Workers of America has purchased $250,000 in State of Israel Bonds, it was announced at a dinner here in honor of Sen. Philip A. Hart, Michigan Democrat.
Some 600 persons, representing leaders in government, labor, religion, education and other fields, watched Emil Mazey, secretary-treasurer of the UAW, present the check for the purchase. Mr. Mazey, who recently returned from a visit to Israel, said that the money would be used to “build the kind of society we want to exist all over the world. I urge labor unions to purchase Israel bonds.” He added that the UAW “has a lot of confidence in Israel. We believe in its future and we want to do everything we can to help Israel.”
Sen. Hart was presented with a plaque on behalf of the Israel bond organization by Shimon Moratt, Labor Counselor of the Israel Embassy in Washington, Sen. Hart said in his response that it was necessary that Israel should be strong in arms “but everyone recognizes that Israel and its people have demonstrated their understanding that while arms are powerful, the ultimate power is an idea.”
