Dr. Stephen S. wise, president of the American Jewish Congress and a member of President Truman’s Commission on Higher Education, ###ay called on the American Association of Colleges to take leadership in the fight ##end all racial and religious barriers to higher education by supporting the re-emendations of the President’s Commission for the passage of state fair educational act ices acts. The Association, which begins its annual meeting in Cincinnati to-### will have before it for consideration the report of a special committee headed Chancellor Tolley of Syracuse University, opposing any legislative efforts to ban ###s in education.
In a letter to Mrs. Mildred McAfee Horton, president of the Association. Dr. #### declared that by opposing such legislation the Association of Colleges would not ###y be disregarding the recommendations of the President’s commissions on Civil ###ghts and Higher Education but “will isolate itself from those throughout the country who seek to remedy an intolerable situation.” He asserted that exclusive alliance on voluntary action by institutions of higher learning such as recommended the Association’s committee had been rejected by the President’s Commission be-###use of its ineffectiveness.
