Secretary General Kurt Waldheim has recommended that the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which expires tomorrow, be extended for another six months. In a report to the Security Council, issued here today, Waldheim warned that any move to withdraw UNIFIL could easily result in a resumption of hostilities not only in southern Lebanon but also elsewhere in the region.
Meanwhile, the Security Council was holding consultations this afternoon in preparation for its formal meeting tomorrow on the mandate’s extension. Diplomatic sources told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that they expect “no problems” regarding the mandate’s extension by the 15-member Council.
