The government yesterday warned the rector of the University of Warsaw that it would withdraw the autonomous rights of the institution if the university authorities proved unsuccessful in maintaining peace and order.
The government threat was issued after National Democratic students ignored the rector’s prohibition of a meeting, which was followed by attacks upon the Jews which necessitated the intervention of the police.
Individual attacks upon Jews were perpetrated by the National Democrats. When pro-government and Socialist students came to their defense, a general skirmish ensued. The police were called out and had to employ water hoses to disperse the students.
Later the National Democrats demonstrated through the streets hurling invectives against the government and the Jews.
Separate demonstrations by University and Polytechnic students were prevented by the police.
