The Jewish Veteran, official organ of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States, carries the following editorial:
From time to time we hear the question—why a Jewish war veteran?
This is generally asked by a veteran of Jewish faith, who is ashamed of his religion, or the people of his race.
The Jewish War Veterans of the United States was founded for certain specific purposes, because these veterans also belong to a race that is, at the present time, a special target for attack —and that in unity we are in a better position to defend our selves.
In the hour of need of our country, we proudly fought the battles of the United States. Our record during the war is one to be proud of, and we in Jewry’s dire need should not be content to efface ourselves— should that be possible. We would then lose the respect of the Jew and non-Jew alike. As American soldiers, sailors and marines, our duty lies with the people of our race, as a Jewish united body—within the United States, as American citizens. To every Jewish war veteran we say—”You have done, and are doing, your work as American citizens. Take your place in the ranks when you are being attacked as a Jew. It is your only defense. Do not grovel—selfeffacement will not save us.”
BACKS FARM TRAINING FOR JEWISH STUDENTS
The Manchester Guardian, reporting on the situation of the Jewish students in Europe, advocates their adjustment to artisanship and farming:
The retraining for agriculture and industrial work and emigration to new countries are two hopeful methods of meeting the crisis among Jewish students. A movement for the retraining of academic men and women had already produced remarkable results in Palestine.
SEES BOYCOTT HIGHLY EFFECTIVE
The Independent, a London publication, commenting on Germany’s trade and debts, says:
An examination of the details of the export drop points to a greater success of the Jewish boycott than was imagined possible. It would not surprise us to know that the proportion of German exports bought in the past by German Jews abroad is sufficient to account for the whole of the present disastrous deficit.
WHY SOVIET ABATES POLICY ON RELIGION
The New York Times, in an editorial explaining why religion is no longer persecuted in Soviet Russia, says:
Two reasons might be cited for the milder Soviet attitude toward religion. The fight against religion was part of the Soviet revolutionary strategy The church was attacked as a pillar of the old social and economic order. Victory being now assured, the Kremlin asserts the Soviet government can afford to be patient and leave it to time to sweep the remnants of the people’s opiate out of Russia.
The other explanation would also involve strategy in the more usual sense. The Soviet rulers give much thought to Japan and to Germany. In case of war they want a patriotic nation and a loyal army behind them.
JEWISH FIRM FIGURES IN REICH-SOVIET DEAL
The New Statesman and Nation of London, writes about the trade agreement just concluded between Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany as follows:
A trade pact has just been signed between Germany and Soviet Russia. The Soviet is to place new orders in Germany to the value of 200,000,000 marks, receiving for this purpose a credit from a German banking syndicate—which is Woolf, the German-Jewish firm. So much for the reality of a nationalist revolution against Bolsheviks, Jews and financiers!
