Reinhold Maier, Premier of the province of Wuerttemberg-Baden, today announced that his administration is prepared to make a “global” settlement for heirless Jewish property with the Jewish Restitution Successor Organization, which represents the major Jewish groups throughout the world.
Premier Maier indicated, however, that he is prepared to complete transactions only in cases where the courts have already ruled on the validity of the Jewish claims. He refused to act on undecided cases because of the possibility that the government will assume responsibility for the claim by paying the JRSO and then find itself involved in a legal dispute with its own citizens.
