The visit here last Friday of General Haller of Poland is still the subject of violent discussion in political circles and promises to be a first class issue in the next campaign. The Mayor claims that Haller and the Legion snubbed him because the former omitted to visit City Hall while the Legion head, General Edwards, who is a republican, denies slighting the Mayor and blames the General.
It now appears that Mayor Curley had been straddling all along and while he made it appear that he would receive the General he nevertheless refrained from extending an invitation and did not send representatives to meet him at the station. This angered Haller and he refused to visit the Mayor on the plea of exhaustion.
To retaliate, the Mayor cancelled his acceptance to speak at the dinner tendered to Haller on Friday evening.
On the whole, the Haller visit here was a frost, only the Legion officials and hosts of police detailed to guard him against imaginary attacks receiving him. At the dinner only 150 of the 500 guests invited came and no Jews were present.
