The Hon. Lilly Montagu, a sister of Lord Swaythling, is the first English woman to preach in an English synagogue on Yom Kippur.

Miss Montagu, who was one of the initiators of the recent International Conference of Liberal Jews, delivered her sermon in the Liberal Jewish Synagogue here. Her subject was “Man’s Answer to God’s Call.”

Officials of the Liberal Synagogue, commenting to the press on this event, stated that although Jewish law forbids women from officiating at religious services, the Liberal Synagogue has abolished this ban, believing in the full equality of the sexes. The Liberal Synagogue also does not insist upon fasting on Yom Kippur, they stated.
