The attitude of several members of the League of Nations, in addition to that of France, New Zealand and South Africa, in the controversy between the Permanent Mandates Commission and the League Council on the jurisdiction of the Commission over mandated territories was made known today.
The secretariat of the League of Nations received the replies of the governments of Belgium, Australia and Japan to the effect that they are opposed to giving the commission the right of hearing petitioners from mandated territories. The governments are also opposed to allowing the Commission to direct a detailed questionnaire to the mandatory powers. The tone of the Belgian reply was less emphatic than that of the others.
