Jewish Consistory of Bulgaria Quotes Minority Treaty (Jewish Telegraphic Agency)

Great interest is displayed throughout the Jewish communities of Bulgaria in the forthcoming trial against the Kehillah of Philipopolis instituted by non-Zionist memers on the question whether or not the Kehillah has the right to impose a tax for the Keren Hayesod.

The Kehillah had refused to permit its functionaries to officiate at circumcisions, marriages and burials in the families of the members who refused to pay the tax for the Keren Hayesod imposed by the Kehillah Board which has a majority of Zionists. The charge is abuse of power and if found guilty the members of the board are liable to imprisonment.

The Attorney General demands dismissal of the kehillah and election of a new board. The Jewish Consistory, on the other hand, maintains that the kehillahs were reorganized by the Bulgarian government in accordance with the international treaties for the protection of the minorities, according to which the kehillahs have the right to raise funds among their members for Jewish communal and national institutions.
